The GG2020 Sessions
The three GG2020 sessions took place in Berlin (17-21 January 2010), Shanghai (11-15 July 2010) and Washington D. C. (16-20 January 2011). Each of these sessions represented a crucial building block of the overall working process that ultimately led to the formulation of the fellows’ design for the future global governance. In addition, the change of host cities gave the participants the opportunity to experience each of the three countries and cultures first-hand as well as to meet with academics and policy-makers from all three participating GG2020 countries.
Session I – Berlin: The first GG2020 session laid the groundwork for venturing into the future of global governance. The fellows identified and analyzed the factors that currently determine the nature of global governance in the three policy fields and those that might influence them in the future. A set of crucial factors were selected and different trajectories for these factors were also explored.
Session II – Shanghai: During the second GG2020 session, the fellows built their vision of global governance in the year 2020 and beyond. Based on the results of the first session, the fellows identified a number of possible future scenarios regarding the shape of global governance within the different issue areas covered. This comprehensive picture of the possible was the starting point for an in-depth discussion on the fellows’ understanding of the desirable shape of global governance and the fundamental principles that should guide global problem-solving.
Session III – Washington D.C.: The third GG2020 session was be dedicated to turning the insights from the previous sessions into a concrete design for the future in each of the three policy areas. The fellows brought together the possible and the desirable by designing a system of global governance that is fit to bring about the fellows’ vision of the future while adhering to the shared principles and managing the remaining normative divergences.
