The GG2020 Program

The GG2020 program brings together twenty-four young leaders, eight respectively from the United States, China and Germany, for three meetings in Berlin (17-21 January 2010), Shanghai (11-15 July 2010) and Washington D. C. (16-20 January 2011). During these meetings, the GG2020 fellows jointly develop a shared vision for the system of global governance in the year 2020 and beyond with a particular focus on the global challenges of climate change, nuclear non-proliferation and global finance.

The fellows make extensive use of the intellectual instruments provided by the field of future research, including trend analysis and scenario planning approaches, in order to jointly explore possible future developments in each of the policy areas. To produce innovative and high-quality results, GG2020 fellows are trained in these approaches by an expert from the private sector. The fellows combine the insights on possible future developments with their normative convictions about the shape and role of global governance in order to create a shared vision of the future system of global governance. This shared vision does not represent a complete group consensus, but is intended to define common ground as well as to identify the diverging and competing views that future global governance mechanisms will have to manage. In addition, GG2020 provides a framework for thinking about the leadership skills that will be necessary to turn this vision into reality by gaining the support of national audiences as well as forging new alliances across sectors and continents.

During the three sessions, key academics from the GG2020 partner institutions as well as external experts will provide input on the different topics and are available for individual advice and guidance to all GG2020 fellows. In addition, debates with policy-makers from the respective countries will be at the core of each of the three sessions.

GG2020 aims at forging a lasting network and a reliable strategic community among the fellows that will enrich the fellows’ perspective beyond the project duration. Each session will allow ample opportunity for the fellows to jointly experience the respective host cities and to grow together as a group. Following the GG2020 program, fellows will remain involved in an active and successively growing alumni network and will build connections with the following program generations.
